CAMPGROUND REVIEW - Shawano County Park in Shawano Wisconsin

We were chomping at the bit to go camping again even though the weather looked like it really wasn't cooperating. On Thursday we thought maybe there might be a break in the rain and we figured let's throw a few things into the camper and head on out to a campground that we don't often get into in the middle of summer.

We wanted to stop at Senzig's Furniture Store in Shawano and take a look at their two-person loveseat recliners. We wanted to see if any of them were narrow enough to fit in the 57" slide of our motorhome. So we stopped there first. There were only two possible options and neither one were exactly right. One was in the $2,000 range and custom ordered, the other one was on sale for $1,300 and it still wasn't exactly right. So we headed on over to the campground. 

This is Shawano County Park and Campground on the North shore of Shawano Lake. It is about 30 miles west of Green Bay on Highway 29. Loop up on County Trunk HH and it goes around the lake. 

The campground is very busy in the summer months and you definitely need to reserve to get a spot. Shawano Lake is a large recreational lake with a lot of boating and fishing and water skiing and jet skis etc. The campground itself has a separate entrance in the road from the beach parking and swimming area.

It's only 45 minutes from home so it was easy enough to head on over and take a first come first serve campsite.

When pulling into the campground there is a firewood kiosk and a self-pay post. The rates are $30 a night for an electric site with water. There is also a water spigot near the entrance to fill up as you enter the park ... with a larger parking area nearby if you want to unhook a towed vehicle. You can also register at the bar part way down the hill.

The outer edge of the main loop of the campground is comprised of all seasonal sites. The assorted campers are already pulled in for the year, but there wasn't anybody around at any of the campsites.

The inner loop is for first come first serve or reservations when it gets busy. We chose site number 46 under two big tall pine trees.  Our power post only had a 50 amp outlet so we needed to use a dog bone adapter for our 30 amp cord. It appears that every two sites share a power post in most circumstances. 

The back area of the campground has a road that goes up a hill around the back side of the shower building. The outer loop is good for RVs but the sites back up to the County Trunk HH by the fence. It's more wooded and pretty back there, but I think you get a lot more road noise. The other half of that loop are tenting sites that are tucked away in the trees and seem to be kind of nice. They are very close to the bathrooms and showers. 

There is a small dump station at the end of that loop before you come back down the hill to the main campground area. 

We didn't go into the bathrooms or showers stalls so we can't really report what they were like. But the building looked nice and neat and new, and there was another one on the other side of the campground too.

All in all, it seemed to be in good condition and a well-kept county park. Each site had a fire ring and picnic table and there were some new tree plantings around nearby to make up for some of the trees that seem to have recently been cut down.

Thursday afternoon, the sun was shining and the sky was clear blue! We got all set up on our site and took out the lawn chairs. A little walk around the loop with the dog and we were all set and ready to make up some supper on the griddle.

We enjoyed figuring out some more things on our new to us Winnebago View. We had the owner manuals out and we were reading up on various features. It was very comfortable to curl up for the night. Everything was peaceful and quiet as there was only one other camper in the entire park besides us. I am sure in the middle of summer this place is jam-packed!

We woke up the next morning to a cloudy sky. The weatherman suddenly changed his forecast. The scattered showers instead was changed to rain all day. That sure didn't sound like fun!

We put out the awning for a while as it was raining, but not windy. We learned in the book of how to be able to tilt the power awning for rain runoff. We sat inside and watched a little TV until we just decided to curl up and take a nice afternoon nap. It really didn't even look good enough to go out for another walk in between the rain showers or have a campfire. So the nap seemed to make the most logical sense!

About 3:00 p.m. we woke up. Steve was perusing his magical wonderful methods of scouring Facebook Marketplace for good deals. Well, he found one. But it meant that we had to pack up quick and head back home to get our SUV and trailer. We had to swing by the bank before they closed at 4:30 to grab some extra cash!

So we went from fully set up with slides and everything out to becoming roadworthy in about 14 minutes flat!!
