Storm hits a Michigan campgorund - and why you should always carry a weather radio!

I am still working on the other two posts from the weekend of Camp Grandma,
but I wanted to post this instead this morning.

Oh my gosh, this is just awful!!   It is the very reason why you should have a weather radio on when camping, and LEAVE your camper and find solid shelter.... one big RV even got picked up and thrown into the lake....   seven pics on this link below:

We carry a weather radio in our motorhome and we keep it ON.   The storms went off by us earlier on Saturday night but the storms were all south or north of us, nothing in our area.  But I listened closely each time the radio went off with a warning.   If it had been even within 25 miles of us, I would have grabbed the baby and headed to the brick shower building.

According to the article, the campground manager saw it on the weather channel on tv but didn't have time to warn anyone.   I would think a weather radio would have been shooting out warnings long before that as the weather moved across the state.   That is ... IF someone had one on.   Don't get me wrong, I am not blaming the campground manager.  We are each responsible for our own safety.   I know -- coulda -- shoulda -- woulda!   But having a weather radio in your rig and turned ON and set to the three closest counties is the best method to be warned during tornado season like this....

  1. It seems that people are oblivious to weather concerns when they are camping. I don't know why. Thanks for another reminder for using a weather radio!

  2. We had a taste of a bad storm last night at our place, see our blog, luckily it was a tree and missed the house by about a foot, but if the storm would have the power to take down trees imagine what it could have done in an RV park. Be safe out there, Sam & Donna.

  3. How awful for those folks!! Thanks for the great warning...again! I sure hope folks take the warnings seriously. It is soooo important to be safe. Just because you are in a campground doesn't make you safe from bad weather.
Thanks again! Can't wait to hear more about Camp Grandma!!

  4. Those photos are so scary! I googled and read a couple reports on the storm and damage, and this stood out:

"Mike Richter, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in White Lake Township, said Monday that the fast-developing storm did not give authorities a chance to notify people in advance. The NWS had issued multiple tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings across the southern part of the state Sunday."

I'm with you on the use of a weather radio, but in this case, I don't think it would have helped. When heavy weather moves through an area we are in, we use the weather radio, the NOAA weather site via the internet, and any local TV channels we can pick up. Just a couple of days ago I posted a blog about our "tornado preparedness" plans - we've really got to be alert and attentive in this part of the country! Safe travels, all.
